When I got my first DVD player, I was over the moon with joy. I could watch all my favorite movies without having to rewind them, skip chapters and even choose among different subtitle and audio tracks.

Nowadays, as DVDs are phased out of existence and replaced by exclusively digital media, those of us who still have large DVD collections are starting to look into ways of keeping up. Luckily,

Thanks to apps like VLC,  it is possible to rip CDs, digitize any DVD for storage or burn them to play on another device. And all that, for, absolutely free.

In this article, we will show you how to easily rip DVDs with VLC.

How to Rip DVDs with VLC Media Player

We have already introduced VLC in the previous paragraphs. Let us, now, see what it can do.

VLC Media Player is a free, open-source media player with transcoding capabilities and improved compatibility. One of its most impressive features, though, is that it can rip video files from several sources like websites and even protection-free DVDs.

Here is how:

Step 1: Download VLC Media Player on your computer

  • Search the terms “VLC download” on Google or any other search engine.
  • Download the installer from the VLC’s website and run it.

Step 2: Load a DVD onto VLC Media Player

  • Insert your DVD into your computer.
  • If VLC Media Player doesn’t load your DVD automatically, go to “My Computer” find the drive, and double click on it.

Step 3: Set up the movie for Ripping

  • Go to “Media” > “Convert/Save“.

VLC Main Screen

  • On the “Disc” tab, select “DVD” and pick your DVD drive. You may even choose to rip only part of the DVD.
  • Check the “No disc menus” box, if you want to remove the movie menu from the ripped file.
  • Click on the “Convert/Save” button.

Step 4: Rip your DVD

  • Set the output format at the “Profile” drop-down menu.
  • Select where your file will be stored at “Destination file“.
  • Click on “Start” to start the ripping process.
Note: VLC Media Player can only rip DVDs with no copy-protection on them. If you are looking to rip copy-protected DVDs, like most commercially available ones, you will need a DVD ripper.

We recommend Tipard DVD Ripper for the following reasons:

  • It is the only Ripper that can handle 100% lossless conversion to over 500 formats.
  • It works 30 times faster than any of its competitors.
  • It makes 1:1 copies of any DVD to ISO or MPG (a strong container format that can store high-quality video and metadata.)
  • It includes a powerful DVD video editor.
  • It offers several additional features like a 3D Maker, a GIF Maker, a Video Enhancer and Compressor, and a Metadata Editor.

You may now store your videos on a Hard Drive or upload them to the cloud. You may also watch them on devices.

If you have DVDs you would like to rip so as to store or share them, you can do so for absolutely free with VLC Media Player. However, if you want to rip copy-protected DVDs like most movies, you will need a DVD Ripper app. We recommend, Tipard DVD Ripper.

The process is similar to the one we followed for DVDs.

  • Go to “Media”>”Convert/Save”.
  • On the next menu pick “CD” where you would pick “DVD”.
  • Then, press the “Convert/Save” button.

A 60-minute video could take VLC anywhere from 30 to 90 minutes to rip depending on the video quality.

VLC doesn’t rip copy-protected DVDs. If VLC cannot rip your DVD, it is likely that it has some kind of DRM system on it.

Ripping DVDs you don’t own the copyrights to is illegal in many countries. Nonetheless, if it’s for personal use, copyright owners almost never bother to pursue the matter.
