Recover Unsaved Notepad Files Poster

Method 1: Recover Unsaved Notepad Files from the Temp Files Folder

Windows has become more user-friendly over the years. If you leave a file unsaved, the system will recognize the action and create a temporary file for it. This is true for Notepad files as well. All you need to do is locate the temp file. But where does Notepad save temp files? By default, the file path of the Notepad temp files on File Explorer is:

C:\Users\username\AppData\Roaming

But if you can’t find it by following the provided file path manually, you can also follow the steps below:

Step 1

On the Start Menu, type in “%AppData%” on the search bar. Then, click on the Open option to launch the File Explorer directly to the file path.

Step 2

Look for the small search bar on the upper-left side of the File Explorer. Then, type in “*.txt” and hit the Enter key. You should see all the text file files on the screen.

Step 3

Look for the Notepad files you left unsaved. You can refer to the date & time to easily pinpoint which one is the file. Then, open the file and finally save it to your desired folder.

Note:

For this method to work, the computer must not be restarted or shut down when you leave the unsaved notepad file. If you did, those temporary files will be erased/overwritten.

Method 2: Recover Deleted/Unsaved Notepad Files from the Recycle Bin

If you have accidentally deleted the Notepad file or temp files, there’s a good chance you can find them in the Recycle Bin. All deleted files that don’t exceed your computer’s free storage space are sent there automatically. However, this method won’t work if you’ve emptied the Recycle Bin.

Step 1

Launch Recycle Bin from the Desktop. If it’s been hidden or removed, you can search for it on the Windows menu by pressing the Windows key.

Step 2

In the Recycle Bin folder, look for the deleted Notepad files (they should have a “.txt” file extension. Hold the CTRL key to select multiple items and then right-click on one of them. Choose Restore among the options.

After that, all the selected Notepad files will be restored to their original folders. Just go to the folder where you’ve saved them and check if the recovery is successful.

Method 3: Recover Overwritten/Unsaved Notepad Files by Restoring Previous Versions

In case you’ve accidentally overwritten the Notepad files, which led to the original texts being unsaved, you can always restore them to the previous version. Yes! Whenever you edit files on Windows, it saves a copy of its previous version. This way, you can always revert to it if you’ve made a mistake.

However, previous versions may not be available if you have replaced the Notepad file with a different one that has the same file name. Also, File History/System Restore has to be activated first prior to overwriting.

Step 1

Proceed to the folder where you saved your Notepad file. Right-click on it and select Restore previous versions. If the file has been deleted, you can right-click on the blank area and choose properties. Then, hit Previous versions.

Previous Version Notes

Step 2

A smaller window should appear on the screen and you should see a list of all the versions of the file/folder. Select the version with the date & time prior to the Notepad file being overwritten.

Restore Previous Version

Step 3

Afterward, click on the Restore button and hit Apply and OK to finalize your action. The Notepad file should be restored to your desired version.
