How to Determine If Your PS3 Is Region-Free and How to Make It

By Published On: July 5th, 2021Categories: Rip Blu-ray

PS3 Region-Free Main Screen

Like many others, I first bought my PS3 because of its gaming capabilities. But then, as newer consoles took over, I was surprised to find out that my old PS3 can still serve me as a Blu-ray player in the autumn of its life.

What is more, given the fact that it plays Blu-ray games from any region and I had several different regions’ Blu-ray discs, I started wondering if I potentially had a region-free Blu-ray player in my console.

So, I did some research, and here is what I found out.

Is the PS3 region-free

Unfortunately, the short answer is no. A difference in the region code between the PS3 and a Blu-ray disc is one among the many reasons why a PS3 would not play a Blu-ray disc. At least, not without the use of third-party software. Don’t worry, though. You won’t have to solve this alone as we have created an easy guide for you.

How to make your PS3 region-free using custom firmware

Before we start turning our PS3 into a region-free Blu-ray player, we should check some things.

  • First, check that your PS3 is running firmware 3.55 or older. If it’s newer than that, it is advisable to make sure that your console can be flashed. Otherwise, it may get bricked in the process.
  • Second, choose a CFW (Custom Firmware) and download it to your computer. To find a CFW, all you have to do is go online and search “PS3 CFW”.
  • Third, you will need a Flash Drive to transfer the firmware to your PS3. Any Flash Drive will work so long as it is formatted in FAT32.
  • Fourth, you will need a program called MultiMan to change the region settings on your PS3.
Note: Some CFWs differ from others in how they work. The vast majority is similar to our example, but we suggest you check specific CFW tutorials nonetheless.

Now that we are ready, let’s start.

How to install CFW on your PS3

Step 1: Download your firmware of choice to your storage device.

  • Insert the USB drive into your PC.
  • On your computer, create a folder in your storage media and call it “PS3“.
  • Inside “PS3” create another folder and name it “UPDATE“.
  • Download a CFW. You can easily find one by searching “CFW PS3” on Google.
  • Your firmware should be named “PS3UPDAT.PUP “. Place that file in the “UPDATE” folder.
  • Plug out the flash drive from the PC and into the PS3.

Step 2: Switch your PS3 to “Safe Mode“.

  • Turn off the PS3 by holding the “Power” button until the power light turns red.
  • Once it’s off, hold the “Power” button until you hear three single beeps (about 15 seconds) and the PS3 switches on and off again.
  • Follow the above process a second time until you hear two single and a double beep.

If you’ve done this correctly, you will see the message “Connect the controller using a USB cable and then press the PS button.

Step 3: Install the firmware.

  • On the next screen choose the sixth option “System Update“.
  • Follow the prompts to locate your Flash drive and install the firmware.

After installation, your PS3 should have custom firmware.

Step 4: Install MultiMan.

  • Transfer the MultiMan installation files into a Flash Drive from your computer (it can be the same one you used for the previous steps).
  • Plug the drive into the PS3 and from the main menu go to the “Install Packages” option.

You can now use MultiMan to change your PS3’s region code so that it matches that of your Blu-ray movies.

Warning: Softmodding your PS3 will void its warranty and might brick it, rendering it unusable. Read below if you would like a risk-free alternative.

How to watch any Blu-ray movie on your PS3 regardless of the region code

If the above process seems too risky or complicated we do have a completely safe and very easy alternative. You can, instead, rip your Blu-ray movies and convert them to a PS3-compatible format with a Blu-ray Ripper and then watch them on your PS3 via a USB storage device.

All you’ll need is:

  • A computer with a BD-Drive. The computer’s specifications do not matter that much.
  • A USB storage device like an external HDD or a Flash Drive. The size depends on how many movies you want to have available at any given time.
  • A Blu-ray Ripper. A Blu-ray ripper is an app that in addition to ripping your Blu-rays, will remove the region lock and copy protection. Ideally, we would also like it to do that without compromising the quality of the original. This is why we trust no other app than Tipard Blu-ray Converter.

Step 4: Finish the ripping.

  • Set the destination of your file.
  • Click on the “Rip All” button to start the ripping.

Rip Your Blu-ray

Once finished, Tipard will take you to the location where the video file is stored. If you cannot find the storage location, click on the little “folder” button at the bottom of the interface next to the storage location directory.

You may then transfer the file to a USB storage device to watch on the PS3.

Given the fact that the PS3 is not region-free, it can only play Blu-rays from a region that corresponds to its own. Thankfully there are two ways of bypassing this problem. One is more involved and requires some familiarity with technology as you need to mod your PS3. The other is making your Blu-ray discs region-free by ripping them and converting their contents to a different format.

What are the Blu-ray region codes?2021-07-06T00:42:30+08:00

Blu-ray region codes are a copyright protection system aimed at giving rights holders the ability to control the distribution of their content across the world. This is brought to fruition through the introduction of region-locked Blu-ray players that will only play Blu-ray discs encoded to their region.

The regions are as follows:

  • Region A: North America, South America, U.S. Territories, Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, and other areas of Southeast Asia.
  • Region B: Europe, Africa, Middle East, Australia, and New Zealand.
  • Region C: Asia (except for Japan, Korea, Taiwan, and other areas of Southeast Asia).
