DVD Region Code: How to Bypass or Change the DVD Region Code

Last Updated on November 19, 2020 by Robert Jackson

Most commercial DVDs have region codes and a region-coded DVD can only be read and played by a DVD player in the same region code.

If you play a region-locked DVD with an incorrect DVD player, a notification saying ‘Incorrect Region Code’ or even worse, the disk will eject automatically. As a result, you won’t be able to watch the DVD playback.

Still, there are methods that you can watch the DVD with the current DVD player though the region code is incompatible. To find out more, you may first get to know about the DVD region code.

What are DVD region codes?

Part of the DRM, digital rights management, the DVD region code system is the method that DVD publishers will apply on DVDs to control the global distribution and prevent improper disk trade.

DVD publishers consider the world as 8 regions and title them with a related code. These are the details of the region codes:

  • REGION 1 — USA, Canada;
  • REGION 2 — Japan, Europe, South Africa, Middle East, Greenland;
  • REGION 3 — South Korea, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Parts of South East Asia;
  • REGION 4 — Australia, New Zealand, Middle, and South America;
  • REGION 5 — Eastern Europe, Russia, India, the rest of Africa;
  • REGION 6 — Mainland China;
  • REGION 7 — Reserved for unspecified special use;
  • REGION 8 — Special international venues for air and oceanic travel.

DVD Region Codes

The US and Canadian DVD lovers can only play Region 1 DVD with a Region 1 DVD player. However, there’re some DVDs in Region 0 or Region 9 which stand for region free.

FAQs:

What does the region free DVD mean?

Unlike those region-coded DVDs are only playable on a compatible DVD player, region-free DVDs have no specific region codes which make them readable and playable to any normal DVD player in the world.

In other words, you can play a region-free DVD with any region-coded DVD player device or computer disk drive.

Can I change DVD region codes or make my DVD region free?

Unfortunately, the region code on a DVD CANNOT be changed or removed by any means. But you can bypass the region code with some DVD ripper software.

How to bypass DVD region code?

Since there’s no way to remove or change the region code on the DVD, your DVD player has no way to read and play the DVD for you now. In this case, you may try to bypass the region code and rip the DVD as a digital video file with your computer.

While dealing with a region-coded DVD, you can insert it into your computer’s disk drive and then apply to a DVD ripper program to rip the DVD content.

With a ripping, you’re able to transform the DVD formatted movie into a more compatible video file that you may transfer and watch on your TV without using the DVD player.
