Does Xbox 360 Play Blu-ray?
Xbox 360 doesn’t play Blu-ray disc. Unlike PS3, when you insert a Blu-ray disc into the Xbox 360 console and intend to play it, all you got is the “Open Tray” notification on the screen. Nothing else will happen. Xbox 360 does support DVD disc playing, but not Blu-ray due to the lack of a native Blu-ray player application in the console.
Is There a Way to Play Blu-Ray On Xbox 360?
Although the Xbox 360 is not innately capable of letting you watch a Blu-ray movie, there are still a few easy steps you can take to make it possible. While Microsoft adds the Blu-ray playback feature to the latter version of Xbox, you can only enable it by ripping those Blu-ray you like to the Xbox 360.
First and foremost, you will need:
- The Blu-ray disc you’re trying to watch
- A computer that is compatible with Blu-ray (has a Blu-ray drive, usually external)
- A user-friendly Blu-ray ripper (easily found through a Google search, but echoshare Blu-ray Ripper is the best of all.)
- A USB drive to put the ripped movie file on.
Once you’ve got these items prepared, follow the steps below and enjoy your Blu-ray movie-viewing experience!

Format / Reformat the USB Flash Drive to FAT32 for Your Xbox 360
If your USB has not been used in or for an Xbox 360 before, you have to let it format itself correctly within the console before doing anything else with it. Once you’ve inserted the drive into the Xbox, click on “Storage Devices-USB Storage Device” with the console controller. You’ll need to wait a moment while the device formats properly.
3 Steps to Play Blu-Ray Movies On Xbox 360
Step One: Load the Blu-ray into the Computer with echoshare Blu-ray Ripper
Naturally, this starts with simply putting the Blu-ray disc into the computer’s drive. If the drive is external, attach it to your computer before doing anything else. If you happen to have an internal Blu-ray drive (which is rare), no extra steps are necessary here.
Once you’re set up with the hardware, launch the echoshare Blu-ray Ripper, select the Ripper module on the menu. Then click on Load Blu-ray to select the disc you insert. The program will start to load Blu-ray automatically.
Step Two: Choose an Xbox 360 Profile (Output Format)
Once your disc has been loaded and the ripper software is ready to get to work, you’ll be given the opportunity to select a Profile from the drop-down list with over 300 preset output formats besides the “Rip All to“.
Just click the drop-down menu > choose Device>scroll down and choose Games, then you can select the best format to rip Blu-ray to Xbox 360.
Before moving on from this step, double-check the Settings to ensure that 1080p is still selected, regardless of which format you’ve chosen.
Tips – Recommended Xbox 360 Video Format
It wouldn’t hurt to do a little research on which Xbox 360 profile is best suited to Blu-ray movie quality and file size. We’ve found that the file that seems to yield the best results is “Xbox 360 H.264 HD video (*.mp4),” but there are WMV, MP4, and other file formats as well.
Xbox 360 Compatible File Extensions: .avi, .divx,.mp4, .m4v, mp4v, .mov, .mp4, .m4v, .mp4v, .mov, .wmv, etc.
Step Three: Rip the Blu-ray Movie and Copy It to the USB
This part is one of the easiest, yet one of the most time-consuming. All you need to do once you’ve got everything else set up is click “Convert” And wait for the software to successfully rip the Blu-ray. Once the process is complete, though, just copy it over onto the USB. After that, you just rip it to the Xbox 360, and you’re all set!
At Last, Play Your Blu-ray Movie on Your Xbox 360!
Congrats, you’re done! Just attach your USB drive to your Xbox 360 console, use the controller to go to “Select Source – Portable Device,” and find your file! Chances are, it didn’t take you long to get everything set up (aside from the time it took to wait for the format of the USB and the movie file itself to convert as necessary), so enjoy the fruits of your labor!
So, does an Xbox 360 play Blu-ray movies? Not automatically, but it is completely capable of doing so with a little extra work.
