Can The Nintendo Wii Play Movies? Yes! This Is How

By Published On: June 23rd, 2021Categories: Rip Blu-ray

How to Watch Movies on Wii Main Screen

Soon after the introduction of seventh-generation consoles, it became obvious that gaming systems were taking over almost every aspect of entertainment. Consoles have moved on from games to other aspects of entertainment like music and movies.

Thus, Nintendo’s decision to forgo all these extra features, and, instead, focus on gameplay and a cheaper console had people wondering:

Can the Wii do more things, like play movies?

In this article, we will talk about whether the Wii can, indeed, play movies and how.

Does the Nintendo Wii play movies?

The answer is both yes and no. While the Nintendo Wii cannot play movies directly via its optical drive, it can via USB and SD Card.

The reasons for this are twofold;

  • Nintendo did not want to pay the licensing fees necessary for the Wii to play DVD movies.
  • Its optical drive would not be able to handle the constant spinning required for DVD playback.

Therefore, to watch your favorite movies on your Wii you should convert them to a supported video format and transfer them to either a USB or an SD Card.

How to watch Blu-ray/DVD Movies on the Wii

Watching movies on the Wii is a three-part process.

  • First, you use a Ripper app to rip the contents from your Blu-rays or DVDs to your computer.
  • Second, you transfer the ripped movies to an SD card/ USB drive.
  • Third, watch them on the Wii.

Before we begin, we should talk about the tools we’ll need;

While most houses ought to have a suitable computer (even low-end ones will work) and some sort of USB Flash drive or SD Card, a ripper app is the kind of specialized software that not everyone has access to.

Thankfully, with Tipard Blu-ray Converter, this changes; You get a professional ripper without breaking the bank.

There are two options when it comes to USB drive formatting:

  1. FAT32 supports a maximum file size of 4GB and is compatible with most Wii homebrew apps.
  2. NTFS has no file-size limit but is not supported by many Wii homebrew.

SD Card

A Wii that has been updated to 4.0 or higher can support SD cards of up to 32GB.

Update your Wii online

  • Connect your Wii to the internet via cable.
  • Go to “Wii System Settings” and select “Wii System Update”.

Update your Wii System

Update your Wii offline

  • Insert a more recent game and it will automatically update your Wii’s firmware.
  • Alternatively, download the latest firmware manually on an SD card and update your Wii through that.
Note: We recommend the first two methods as updating your console via SD Card could cause it to stop working.

[Third Part] How to play movies on your Wii via USB/SD Card

Using the Wii’s “Photo channel”

  • Plug your SD card into your Wii.
  • Go to the “Photo Channel” and press “Start
  • Select the “SD” option and then your video files.
The “Photo Channel” can play videos only via SD Card and supports the following formats: AVI, JPEG, MOV

Using the “Homebrew Channel”

  • Install one of the many custom media players for the Wii via SD card.
  • Go to the “Homebrew Channel” and press “Start”.
  • Select your custom media player (Like MPlayer).
  • Run your movie.

Custom media players need to be installed on a soft-modded Wii, but can support more files and can even stream movies from USB drives.

Summing it All up

The Nintendo Wii may not be able to play movies directly, but movie fans who own this console will not have to ditch it for a DVD/BD player thanks to a very easy workaround: Wii’s “Photo Channel” can play MOV and AVI movie files through via SD card. Therefore, all you have to do to enjoy your favorite movies on the Wii is to convert them to a supported format using Tipard Blu-ray Converter.
