What are Side by Side 3D format and Under/Over 3D format?
A single 3D video will be divided into 2 sub-frames side by side. The left frame is for your left eye and the right one is for your right eye.
The horizontal resolution of the 3D media will be halved in the SBS format. In other words, when the original resolution is 1980*1080, the resolution of each sub-frames will be 990*1080.
The output of an OU format video is 2 sub-frames with halved vertical resolution. In other words, when the original resolution is 1980*1080, the resolution of the sub-frames will be 1980*540.
How do the 2 formats work to display the 3D effect?
No matter which format you apply, your 3D TV will first display the 2 frames on the screen. Then, you need to sync a pair of active shutter glasses to the 3D TV.
During the movie playback, the glasses will detect both frames and choose one to upscale with a high-quality 3D effect. Finally, you have a sight of one 3D frame.
